Every good and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of Lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow cast by turning (James 1 v 17)

I have long been fascinated by the beauty that we can see in creation around us, and in particular, by the images taken in space. There is something about the vastness of creation and the concept of eternity that space somehow manages to convey to our temporal human understanding.

The Greek word for 'turning' in James 1 v 17 is only used when describing the revolving of the planets in the heavens. It is remarkable that James used this word as I am not sure how much of a concept there was in that time period of how the planets orbit around the sun.  The Earth turns around the sun at a 23.5 degree tilt, and in this orbit it creates shadows and a changing state of seasons and daylight hours on the Earth.  'A shadow cast by turning'.  In contrast God who is the source of all light and the 'Father of lights' is unchanging in his nature. He is immovable and does not cast any shadows.  He is light within light and the same yesterday, today and forever.

God does not need to change for he is perfect in his being.  Nothing needs to be added to or taken away from Him.  Everything that comes from him, every gift, comes out of his perfection and from his nature which is all goodness.

There is tremendous security for us in this knowledge. 'God is light and in Him is no darkness at all (1 John 1 v 5)'.  Just think on it.  This is our Father who loved us so much He sent his one and only son to die for us and redeem us to himself, and his being is full of goodness, love and compassion towards us.  This steadfast nature will not change or be altered or turned. It exists irrespective of our position and state of being.  He is utterly to be depended upon and is the Rock on which we can build our lives and take our security.  Let us lean on the everlasting arms of a Father who truly loves us and cares for us, gifting us with every good thing. ' All the riches of His grace, all the fullness of His blessing, all the sweetness of His love, He gives to you, He gives to me'.  Let all things that we experience in life be seen in this light.
