"I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity." I Timothy 2 v 1&2

Recently I read that John Wesley said “God does nothing except in response to believing prayer.” Like me I am sure that you are a strong believer in the power of prayer. We have seen so many answers to prayer that I know we do truly believe that it is so important in our christian walk. Billy Graham has been quoted as saying that the only prayers that God does not answer are the ones he prays on the golf course!

When I read the  words of John Wesley though I thought what a responsibility there is on the church to pray. Prayer makes christians the most influential people in the whole world! We may never be powerful politicians or people of great wealth, we may not feel we are part of the movers and shakers of our society - but we have access to a great God who wants to do wonderful things in answer to our prayers.

Prayer is not conquering God’s reluctance, but taking hold of God’s willingness. There is the story of the man who had a dream and in it he was taken by an angel to a giant warehouse full of all sorts of treasures. He asked why all these treasures were there and the angel told him they were all answers to prayers but people had given up too soon and had never received their answer to prayer. Prayer is not conquering God’s reluctance, but taking hold of God’s willingness - how many treasures have we missed out on all because we have not prayed or given up too soon.

Let us be encouraged to pray - God is trusting us to do this so that He can "pour out a blessing that we cannot contain"
