The Thought for the Week this week is written by Susie Sharkey

“The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out” Leviticus 6:13

When I was about 15 or 16 I was invited to a bar-b-q which was being held one evening up in Mugdock woods. There were probably about thirty people there, lots of food and a big bonfire. It was a Church of Scotland Christian Youth Fellowship and I remember all the folks sitting round the fire singing. I wasn’t a Christian but I enjoyed the evening very much. As the evening wore on I had to walk home so I said Goodnight and left the group. Two things struck me as I walked away from that group and it has always stuck in my mind….it was very dark and very cold. While I had been beside the big fire it had given off light and heat…lots of it. And it wasn’t until I walked away from the fire that I realised how cold and dark it was. And the further away I walked the colder and darker it became. I wanted to go back and stay beside the fire where it was warm and bright.

I wonder if you’re thinking what I’m thinking? When we stay in the heart of the fire of God there is Light and there is Heat….the Light of Christ and the fire of the Holy Spirit. But when we drift away from the Fire, our lives become cold and dark, life loses its shine and everything seems dull. Perhaps that’s the way you are feeling just now and you don’t really know why. Maybe it’s because you have walked away from the fire? You need to retrace your steps back to where the fire is burning, stay beside that fire and let it’s Light and Heat touch your heart again.
