Reflections for Advent

by Susie Jean Sharkey

from ‘Still Waters Deep Waters’

‘May my great aim, Lord, this Advent be to bring
happiness to You, through the giving of myself – my
time, my plans – for You to use as You see fit.   My gift to
You must take precedence over my gifts to my family
and friends.   For it is Your birthday, Lord – not mine, not the
children’s, not friends’, but Yours.   Part of my gift to You
must include my response to those lonely souls whom
the world passes by;  those whose need is so great
that they cannot repay me;  those whom I know, but
have never felt attracted to, and criticised.
 Forgive me, Lord.

So the spring-cleaning of my spiritual house will take
precedence over our physical one;  the nourishment of
our souls comes before the Christmas dinner;  the
beauty of loving hearts in harmony be more
important to me than an array of tinsel and coloured
lights.   And good, in-filling times alone with You, must
happen alongside good, outpouring times with friends
and family.  Help me, Lord, to get my priorities right,
so that the busy burden of this time may
be turned into blessing.

May an awareness of Your presence fill my every
waking hour, so that far from being squeezed out,
You may come with me into my days, as my guide.   For You
are the only one who can help me find those surprising,
secret springs of Christmas joy that You planted for us
amongst the responsibilities, temptations
and heartaches of our world.’

for ADVENT 2013

1 December

“Come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord….He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His path.” Isaiah 2 v 1-5

Reflect on our preparations for Advent…our hopes and expectations…looking forward!

2 December

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light….” Isaiah 9 v 1,2

Reflect on God’s Word. The Light has come into the darkness. Who is our Light?

3 December

“The spirit of the Lord will rest on Him- the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and of power, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord…” Isaiah 11 v 2,3

Reflect on how great and mighty is our God!

4 December

“…I will raise up….a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.” Jeremiah 23 v 1-6

Reflect on how we can support and encourage our leaders today. How sure are we about our government – church – family – and friends?

5 December

“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord’.” Psalm 122 v 1

Reflect on how we include others in our preparation and busy-ness…prioritising our time and energy in our Advent timetable to put the Lord first…and then all else follows.

6 December

“Accecpt one another, then just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” Romans 15 v 7

Avoid discord in life. Concentrate in harmony and mutual respect. Think of the homeless – prisoners – drug addicts…..

7 December

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6 v 25-34

Reflect on how we put the Lord first in our lives. He gave Himself unconditionally.

8 December

"For unto us a child is born.....and He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father....." Isaiah 9 v 6,7

What a marvelous thought! The infant Jesus will inherit all these titles. Where is our trust?

9 December

"The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light." Romans 13 v 12

The only true Guide for us is our Lord Jesus Christ. May we be true to what we believe.

10 December

"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come." Matthew 24 v 42

Our society is changing in its moral and ethical standards. Reflect on how sure we are in our value and lifestyle.

11 December

" He will defend the afflicated....and save the children of the needy....." Psalm 72 v 4

Jesus came to be our Saviour. Take everything to the Lord in prayer. Reflect on the 'saving' work of the Police, NHS, Firemen, Barnabas, MAF, Open Doors.

12 December

"In those days John the Baptist came.....'Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is near'." Matthew 3 v 2

Reflect on our waywardness; self-ness; the sin of the world..and seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

13 December

"We must pay more careful attention therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away." Hebrews 2 v 1

If you think you're standing safe and secure, be careful you don't fall!

14 December

"Say to those with fearful hearts, 'Be strong, do not fear, your God will come'...." Isaiah 35 v 3,4

As advent proceeds may we be helpful, supportive and interested others' circumstances.
